Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.
— Oscar Wilde.
Sellene is nine years old. She lives in Kamloops, BC with her adoptive parents and siblings. She loves to ride her bike and swim. She loves to dance and play Hay Day. She would love to play minecraft but isn’t allowed.
She currently attends school part time, in a grade 5/6 split class despite testing at a Grade two level earlier this year. She also has multiple learning disabilities and several diagnosis that make it challenging for her to learn in a conventional class. This has been completely unsuccessful and rather than work to meet her needs, her school has looked at pulling back support. We could homeschool her, but that’s not fair. I can’t be her Mom and her Teacher. I don’t know how. And, our school district receives funding to do this. They should do it right.
Sellene has many roadblocks to learning the same way other kids do. But, that doesn’t stop her from wanting to be in school with her peers.
She wants to be a nurse (this month). She wants to be in yoga. She wants some friends.
I’m going to chronicle our journey trying to get Sellene a fair, inclusive, meaningful education on this blog.
I encourage you to follow along to see how hard it is in British Columbia to get kids with special needs a real chance to succeed at school.
You ALL pay for Sellene to go to school. You all deserve for her to get the education she is entitled to. It shouldn’t be this hard.
